Monday Morning Photo - Plaza Mayor, Salamanca

One of the most beautiful squares in Spain the Plaza Mayor, a baroque style plaza, on the north side is the City Hall building. Decorated with stonework medallions between each arch, including depictions of  Carlos I, Alfonso XI, Fernando VI, Cervantes and Santa Teresa. The buildings are three storeys, supported by semicircular arches topped by a balustrade.  Plaza Mayor, Salamanca See my One Day in Salamanca - What Not to Miss post on Luxury Spain Travel. Monday Morning Photos - Castillo del Almodovar

One of the many things I love about Spain is the sheer number of fortifications. In the distance or round a bend and up pops a castle, fortress or watchtower.

I live in Jaen province which has more fortifications than any other area in Europe. Almost every town has at least one Moorish remain, some more. This was a fabulous castle (one of many I've seen lately) in Almodovar de Rio just east of Cordoba city.
